Okay… I made a mistake.
After making my post The record industry doesn’t want your money — and only after publishing that post — I hopped on to iTunes and was shocked to discover that some of the obscure acts I mentioned in the post, and was so convinced were long abandoned by the music industry, are actually available in iTunes.

Imagine my surprise to find Pukka Orchestra, Chalk Circle and Scott Merritt (though they mispelled ‘Overworked’ as ‘Overworker ‘ which are two very different things) to name a few of the less-remembered Canadian bands of the 80′s. I guess I can forgive iTunes the absence of Ottawa bands Eight Seconds and One to One.

I failed to mention that I may have bought a few dated songs from the iTunes music store.

That’s funny ‘cus I just bought a bunch of Chilliwack on iTunes a few weeks ago after seeing that it had been added after sometime. I would have _loved_ to be in on that Twitter conversation but as it happened I was playing with my 80s band The McFlies, so I was there in spirit I guess. :-)
Mark, I think in some cases there are rights issues around some of these older acts split among now defunct labels and publishing companies, and songwriters who have since moved to Tatamagouche or Fernie. Also in some cases master recordings can be hard to track down — there’s a terrific story of the band FM and their classic album Black Noise, how they couldn’t find the masters to put it on CD so they ended up using a vinyl copy and then cleaning the sound with digital software! Hilarious.

Pukka Orchestra is on iTunes???
I’m spending some money if I ever get home from work today — I bought the LP back in the day, but don’t have it any more.
I hope I can get Cherry Beach Express! :)

Suddenly I have Trooper’s “The Boys in the Bright White Sports Car” going through my head…
Though that would be from my youth, the mis-spent seventies, I suppose…

iTunes has Blue Peter, that is crazy!
Comment by Dave Brodbeck — April 8, 2008 @ 7:33 pm
Okay… I completely misjudged the music industry. That is crazy. I used to be a huge fan of Blue Peter.
How obscure can we go and still find it on iTunes?
Comment by Mark — April 8, 2008 @ 7:55 pm
It would appear they do not have any Goddo or Doucette on iTunes.
Apparently you can’t go THAT obscure…
Comment by Jay — April 8, 2008 @ 8:00 pm
Oh, and they do have an FM album but not the one I mentioned.
On the other hand, they seem to have 6 Nash The Slash albums.

Shockingly, Doug and the Slugs is NOT in iTunes.
Not surprisignly, neither Glen Johansen (Walking a Fine Line) nor Paradox (Another Day) is in iTunes.

Mamma let that boy play some rock and roll…..
I am pretty happy that there is no Goddo…
Comment by Dave Brodbeck — April 8, 2008 @ 8:38 pm
Goddo performed at my high school back in the day.
Suddenly, I feel ancient.

Dave, I was about to complain that yes Blue Peter was there but not “red filters” but a search showed it is now there. Woo Hoo.
Now, not Canadian but we need some Hunters and Collectors.
Comment by daryl cognito — April 8, 2008 @ 9:54 pm
John, did you buy some Pukka Orchestra? I listened to Might as well be on Mars 30 times today.
Comment by daryl cognito — April 8, 2008 @ 9:55 pm
I saw Hunters and Collectors in a bar in London in about 85. Erica Ehm was at the show.

Dave, seriously jealous. In early 86 I saw Oingo Boingo with Dan Elfman not quite the same
Comment by daryl cognito — April 10, 2008 @ 8:47 pm
@daryl and Erica had a fine leather skirt on….
We went to the show, my Dad, my Brother and I. Dad, at the time, owned a music store in London. It was cool, we all had black leather jackets on, and this bar, umm, Kipling’s I think was the name, they had this dress code to get rid of bikers, no leather jackets. So we walked in, a bouncer said to us ‘guys no leather’ my Dad looked at the bouncer and said ‘fuck off’.
So the bouncer is about to come over and kick us out, and the owner of the bar comes over and buys us a pitcher of beer, Dad’s store put the PA in the bar…..
Reason 8744 why my Dad rocks…..

@dave, you should start a blog “8744 reason’s my dad rocks”. My dad rocks but he’s more of a roger whitaker kind of guy.

@Daryl, my Dad has been out for beers with Gob and Blink 182… He is by far the hippest 64 year old guy you would ever meet.
