PodCamp Pittsburgh lineup heavy on skills development
PodCamp Pittsburgh kicks off in a few days with a solid lineup of sessions truly designed to build necessary production, promotion and voice skills. This is a community effort that is demonstrating that, at its core, Podcasting is a medium that depends on basic skills to be successful and engaging.
I’m intrigued by the slant towards video Podcasting with sessions that range from basic production skills to the use of greenscreens. Two sessions that I’m sorry I will miss include Standardized Audience Metrics (presented by Chris Macdonald and Dave Chekan of Libsyn), and Going Global (presented by Jason Cable).
We’ve matured to a point where we now need to explore both the necessary and desirable core-skills and share them so that the whole community can benefit.

I hope we don’t get too mature. There needs to be a lot of space for low tech, low investment podcasting too. If we end up sounding just like commercial radio, what have we gained?

If podcasting doesn’t have room for Shane and Tom’s Squeezebox, I don’t want any part of it :)

Just to make sure we’re not too mature, we’ll be partying with the folks from Tiki Bar TV. Check it out:

I don’t think maturity needs to imply a financial investment. We’re seeing a commitment to share skills that make it easier to achieve goals at all skill levels.
What I find most encouraging is that the sessions deal mostly with skills instead of technology. A great technician isn’t always the person with the best technology; it’s the person who knows how to use anything at his/her disposal, hard and soft skills included, to make something sound great.
