Yeah. I'd recommend getting a stereo y-splitter that puts one input signal to the left channel and the other input signal to the right (rather than blending the two signals). This will allow you to edit/process the signals as separate audio channels in your audio editing suite. You can do this with any type or combination of types of microphones. That's how Andrea and I have recorded JustOneMoreBook.com with two wired lapel mics and my Editorl R1 recorder.

Thanks for the post Mark.
$800 bucks for one wireless mic is pricey but great quality audio is priceless...
What if I'm trying to record two speakers? Can I get two wireless mics that will record to the same MP3 file simultaneously?

Another thing to keep in mind is that tweeting valuable, timely, appropriate info is ineffective if no one can find the MP's account. A surprising number of MPs have almost hidden their twitter accounts by not listing their twitter id prominently on their websites, not identifying their account with the MPs real name, location, the fact that they are an MP, or their area of responsibility. Some have not even included their photograph.

Mark, I enjoyed our conversation earlier this week. Let's keep the dialogue going! I certainly agree the SMR does not replace traditional media outreach, and on its own, does not tick the “social media” box on your communications plan. It is a tool – the power is in how you use it.

Given how difficult my social anxiety makes events like podcamps, PAB for me, being so close (thanks to live streaming, twitter, and the audio greetings gathered and sent to us by Daniele and Sean) and yet so far was confusing and enlightening. It felt so good to see the smiling faces, hear the smiling voices and to gather up some great ideas and education. It felt so, so sad not to be there to soak it all up in person. Turns out that even for painfully shy me, nothing beats the real thing.

A huge thanks to everyone who helped us feel included this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing everybody again really soon

As much as I have an unhealthy dependency on my Livescribe, and for all of the Livescribe pens my friends have bought on my recommendation (24 at last count), I have to be honest with myself and acknowledge that if the iPad allowed me to carry one device to manage my email, surf the web, stay connected on my various social networks, use a productivity suite to get work done, do creative multimedia projects, listen to music, watch movies, play games, read books and have electronic paper that captured my handwriting and drawings and even did OCR and recorded synced-to-text audio (like the Livescribe pen even if the mic is in the iPad and not the stylus), I'd probably find it very easy to leave my Livescribe pen at home with my laptop, iPod, iPhone and eReader (note that I don't own an eReader).

Hi Mark,
The iPad can never be a serious thread for the Livescribe Smartpen because of its size. It is much easier and convenient to carry around the smartpen and a pocket notebook (or just the pen, if you only need voice recording)

Pencaster
http://pencaster.com/

This is exactly where Apple shines. They release the form with a few "groundbreaking" features, which makes the expected the unexpected. This of course means we can all fantasize about the cool new stuff we'd like to see in the unit which will surely come.

In this way, Apple appeals to the early adopters and then has something extremely appealing to drive a new pitch in the curve.

While I agree that multitasking will be beneficial, I feel Apple needs to make the move into ePaper first if they wish to create something truly remarkable.

The camera/webcam and Adobe Flash features are also very important. However, I'm reminded of Apple's delay in putting "expected" functionality like copy/cut/paste on the iPhone and iPod Touch and I think that Apple probably isn't in any big rush to put the staples on the iPad ahead of new features and establishing solid vehicles for recurring revenue.

It's going to need multitasking, Flash and maybe even a webcam before it's going to be a serious mobile device. I agree with you Mark, this device is just to make a splash, the real mobile device will be released in the future maybe with version 2 or 3. Nice article. :)

Morrie... I'm very sorry I didn't approve your comment sooner. I never received a Disqus comment notification.

It really does seem that foster parents programs are the best hope for the Haitian people right now. The children need to be removed from the danger of unstable buildings and the potential for disease. The relief and reconstruction effort has the potential of making New Orleans seem insignificant by comparison.

I think when you donate to Kiva, there's an option on whether you want to send friends an email. I'm not sure whether you can edit the content of the email, but I know you can choose not to send to friends. Facebook is doing stuff that's reasonably similar, trying to get people onto Farmville, Mafia Wars etc.

I'd thought about donating to Kiva, for Haiti relief, but will now get back in contact with Plan, which used to be Foster Parents Plan. About 20 years ago for 5-6 years, through them, I sponsored an 8 year old, and I've often wondered how he's getting on, or if he's getting on. Now isn't the time to think about that. The sad thing is the country is so poor, the people so poorly governed and generally undernourished, and the Governments so historically pathetic, inept and (yes) corrupt, that there really isn't a great deal that people can look forward to. Emergency relief will probably be clearing rubble, trying to stop disease, and trying to (for a short time) feed and clothe as many people as possible. Best wishes to you and the family Mark.

Politicians sometimes make us so frustrated, and we want to rail against them, but we forget that they're human, with human strengths, feelings and failings. Good to see that some can indeed turn the other cheek.

Here is the real definiton of an expert. You have to have either 10yrs or 10,000 hrs of experience your field of study or service you do.

1. You need the academic background BS, MS, or PhD
2. You need to have spent time in the field and hours training as aforementioned.
3.
I didn't mention in my post that one of my favourite business anecdotes appears on page 60...

In December 2008, I spent $75,00 to offer free shipping codes for Winelibrary.com via three marketing/advertising channels—a perfectly placed billboard on the New Jersey Turnpike, direct mail, and radio. The billboard brought in a hundred and seventy orders. The radio campaign did about two hundred and forty orders. Through direct mail we got a little over three hundred. I Twittered out—for free—a free shipping code and got seventeen hundred orders in forty-eight hours.

I really enjoyed Gary's book too but you have definitely added more depth to the approach which I think was missing.

Online and on the written page you get swept away in Gary's passion and energy. He's an infectious character that pulls you into his world of thinking. His personality plays a huge part in the equation and affects D - delivery.

Andy... As far as I can tell, ducking is only about audio levels. It's not sophisticated enough to identify and manipulate specific frequencies. I also find that ducking is harsh, adjusting levels quickly based on a specific threshold.

Where ducking becomes particularly irritating (and unnatural) is when someone takes a slightly-longer-than-a-breath pause. This is where the level will jump up and down in a short period of time.

Ultimately, you want to remember to create a pleasing experience for the listener. If they enjoy what you have to say and the way it's presented, they'll be glad to give you more time.

Hi Mark - really like the tip about voice over music. I've always used ducking but I'll definitely try reducing the competing frequencies from the music. I've heard quite a few mixes where the voice stands out clearly from the music, but the music does not seem to duck! Is this how they did it? Great post and thanks again.

Hi Mark

I wanted to thank you for the most fitting tribute to my brother that you have posted here. David thought very highly of you, and he would be touched to see how you will remember him.

I hope that you and Andrea are able to stay strong together in the face of your own battle, and I want you to know that whatever you need and whenever you need it, you can count on myself and the rest of the O'Farrell clan to be there for you and your family.

Ah, well, I only noodle. I can play the background to "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, and, somewhat "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (cover of the NIN song).

But, as Bono said during "Rattle and Hum", all I need is 3 chords and the truth.

Someday I'll make it up above the 49th parallel again.

Speaker Andrew Rugasira regarding trade in Africa to reduce poverty reminds me of the recent Ted.com talk I watched. It was given by Paul Romer and the topic was Charter Cities, where he said the British administration of Hong Kong did more to better life there than any world aid has ever done. Then he described an incredible scenario where Guantanamo, Cuba could be the next Hong Kong if it was administered by Canada. Wild stuff.

Hi Mark,

It was good to meet you a few weeks ago. Thank you for taking the time to post some of your observations.

One minor correction that I wanted to mention is that last year I was unavailable to present the show for the client due to another booking.I was able to recommended Eric Leclerc as a suitable alternative. This year the client called earlier and I was able to accommodate them.

I hope you've been keeping well and I look forward to the next time we meet.

Cheers,
Chris

I think it's easy if you're in the right relationship, and if you continue to value it and work on it. Air and I are coming up on our 14th wedding anniversary this year, and I still look forward to being with her every day. But there are plenty of people who try to preserve relationships that shouldn't be preserved, or who don't work at ones that do. That's why one that lasts is worth celebrating. Good job, Mark and Andrea!

Mark, I think most Canadians do know how the system works. Just because I completely disagree with what the opposition is doing does not mean I don't understand how it works. Shaking our political foundation at this time is just plain bad governance. I'm not saying Harper is perfect, god knows I didn't vote for him. But regardless of the outcome, this ego driven power play has damage our country.

Where is Ed Broadbent when you need him?

Mark, I heard this comment briefly on the Buff, where you said you'd written about it in your blog (I think this was just before the last Meetup/Podcamp/thing. You're a tall poppy (literally) and people suffer from tall poppy syndrome. They tend to knock people who are successful, and who don't necessarily deserve knocking. Its all very well saying I want to see more of X(insert gender/stereotype/niche etc here) but the insert needs to want to become involved. You're helping them to learn about the process, as is Bob and the rest of us, but you can lead a podcaster to a microphone, but you can't necessarily make them watch their levels - if you get my drift.

Enjoy your holiday break if you get one, and hope the road trip was fantastic.

If I was motivated I'd plug the mic in and send an mp3, but hey, the kettle's boiling and I need a cup of tea.

Morrie.

I hear where you're coming from Mark. This should stimulate some interesting discussions. I'm looking forward to facilitating. We should probably call this "Podcamp Ottawa - Unplugged" to allow room for a traditional Podcamp event to be held here as well.

Mark,

I don't know if this is the same thing, but we know that having a support group is a large part of therapy when it comes to achieving goals in life. Whether we're talking anger management, weight loss, alcoholism, or what-have-you.

I've found in several cases that blogs and podcasts fill this need at least to some extent. My first podcast, Answers for Freelancers! pulls in roughly 700 other listeners, many of whom are just glad to know that other people face the same problems they do.

My blog, 9 Months to Tri, helped me personally while I was in training in 2007-08 to run my first triathlon last year. While I often was the only one actually running, swimming, lifting or biking much of the time, turning around and chronicling what was happening felt a lot like I was doing it with a group of people, and that helped to keep me motivated and moving forward.

Hope that helps!

And Derek, that was exactly the argument I concluded my post with.

I don't believe I said that the word "niche" reflected badly on podcasting -- if that's what came across, then I argued the point badly. I said that niche is a handy label that, like many labels, can be very limiting and constricting depending on how it's used.

And that's how it was used in mainstream media, especially when justifying what *not* to put on the air. As you've point out Mark, the beauty of podcasting is that it is capable of ignoring that, of permitting stuff considered to be "marginal" by the mainstream to find it's audience.

It doesn't always *do* it, though, and that's what I'm thinking about. Note, too, that I'm coming at this pretty much from the point of view of a podcast *listener* - I havne't produced much content myself in months.

As a listener, I'm wondering -- do I ignore podcasts which have been defined as "niche", because I assume there's nothing there for me? I think I do, sadly, and when I meet someone in person, it often makes a huge difference and I find myself suddenly subscribing and grabbing the back catalogue of podcasts just to catch up.

And then I wonder -- why did I buy into that label? Why did I make certain assumptions? And are others doing this, too, and can we change that? Should we change that?

I found my 20th reunion (in 2006, slightly pre-Facebook-ubiquity) more fun than the 10th -- after 10 years, most of my cohort (me included) were still "no quite grown up." What I mean is, still new in the job market, maybe newly married but not likely to have kids yet, still fundamentally finding our ways in life.

After 20 years there was a much better sense of who we were becoming, rather than who we used to be, and so the discussion was more interesting. My wife's 20th reunion the same year (which I didn't attend) was a huge blowout of a party, and they hadn't even had a 10th reunion at all.

Maybe Facebook makes the facts easier to find, but I don't think it alters the inevitable dissonance of meeting the people you don't see regularly face-to-face, and matching up who they are with who they were more than half our lifetimes ago.

So yeah, I think 20th reunions are still worth it.

I don't want to rationalize the CastRoller or Collectik models. However, two things do come to mind. First, Google ads are small and unobtrusive where podcast.com is blatant, large and flashy -- they advertise in your face and deliver the message up front. Second, CastRoller and Collectik have limited themselves to a single advertiser where podcast.com has gone whole hog with the available space, putting advertising first, content second.

It's easy to get put off by one approach and be accepting of another simply by the message sent by the directory's owner. While I should probably be excited about the models put together by Hugh and William, I find them to be far more palatable and I can forgive their approach. It's a total double standard, I know. It just feels like CastRoller and Collectik promote podcasts and podcast.com promotes advertisers.

You should know that this particular session, How to Make Good Radio When You Don’t Have Any Time or Good Tape, didn't end up happening. And many, many people were pretty bummed about it.

And Third Coast is great about putting up the conference audio up on their site. So you can listen to the rest of that Jonathan Goldstein session. He's a very funny guy!

Overselling of seats is a fact of life. There's a lot of folks who pay full fare - which can be exchanged for another flight for $100 or less - at the very last moment.

Airlines don't try to bump passengers - this was not handled correctly - stick to it and escalate as needed to get your refunds.

Sorry about your experience - not pleasant. But try to remember the skills in the first landing - pretty impressive!

Mark, for better or worse, there's something else that distinguishes print news from online blogging.

Once the shouting begins, the tenor of the debate is pretty much the same, even if print editors have some moderating influence.

But the difference between traditional media and the blogosphere is that, for the most part, blogs *begin* with opinion, much of it unsubstantiated. A newspaper or a reputable online news site at least tries to deliver cornerstone content that is reasonably balanced, accurate, and fair. (We can comfortably exclude FOX News and most talk radio from that observation.) The majority of blogs have no such reference point.

It may seem like a stretch to think of conferences as the place to find a base of knowledge or evidence to give greater substance to the "op ed" content in blogs. But there's an interesting connection to be made here: Just as many blogs are crying out for a bit more substance, the world of meetings and events is looking to the interactive Web as a place to extend the discussion far beyond the closing plenary of a live event.

In sharp contrast to mass media, a point in common between blogs and conferences is that they both lend themselves to narrowcasting: you'll find conference sessions on the most arcane topics, and they're often the most interesting and transformative, even if there are only a couple of dozen people in the room.

On balance, I think there's more good than harm in the unwritten rule (that you've now written down, now that I think of it...) that site owners don't tamper with bloggers' opinions. But there's value to expert knowledge, too, and the online world loses out when we fail to include it, or forget how distinguish between well-researched fact and well-articulated opinion. Conference content may well be one of the ways to fill that gap.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a great place to hold Meetups for a variety of reasons. The accomodations are close to the downtown core so there is no need to drive from the event to restaurants. There is much to do there too. In summer there is world class live theater, great shopping, the fort, the museum, and several art galleries. Thrill seekers go for the whirlpool jet boats. And then there is the wineries many of which have won awards all over the world. All this in a small and safe community within an hour and a half drive from Toronto or less than an hour from buffalo.

I've always encouraged my children to pursue their interests and support them in their pursuits as much as possible. Both of them have a thirst for learning.

Fortunately, we live in a neighbourhood with excellent public schools that for the most part, are able to attract wonderful teachers who make learning fun, interesting and often intellectually stimulating.

I agree kids today are stressed and already overburdened with homework so I haven't made a point of hiring tutors to further develop their strengths or fill in any gaps. However, if one of them was having a tough time in school and they needed additional support, I wouldn't hesitate.

I think this is tremendous. Some people oft hide behind a keyboard, or even sometimes a microphone, and are truly nasty to others. This can lead to even more nasty crap for sure. I have been the recipient of such umm, call it commentary, and it hurts like hell. It is difficult in those cases to 'just ignore it' as one is often told. Good on both of you.

One of the myths around books is that meaning resides in the text as opposed to in the interaction(s) that take place while reading a text and after reading a text as further connections are made. I often ask my students to talk about their fondest memories of reading a book. Time and time again their responses focus on the context in which a book was read such as with a loved one, with a mom, with a good friend, in connection with a life altering or sad event, and so forth...

In our home there is no particular time for reading although we do read at least four books to our four-year-old before bedtime. We also have book shelves and book baskets in different places around the house. During the day we read books mostly when our son wonders about various things or when he finds connections between something he is doing/playing and a book that is in sync with whatever it is he is doing.

One of the myths around books is that meaning resides in the text as opposed to in the interaction(s) that take place while reading a text and after reading a text as further connections are made. Time and time again their responses focus on the context in which a book was read such as with a loved one, with a mom, with a good friend, in connection with a life altering or sad event, and so forth…

John:

I haven't run into any specific problems with the amount of energy from the ATM41HE to my Edirol R1.

Remember that dynamic mics generally aren't powered, However, there are some models of microphones that use plug-in power (e.g. my in-ear binaural mics) and even phantom power (e.g. condensers). Note that some portable recorders offer either or both types of power (even if it is a drain on your batteries).

My best advice to you is to take your H4 to a music store and ask to try a few dynamics at the counter. Record and listen back to determine which mic works best with the H4 AND your voice.

Mark

My condolences are with you, your fellow club members, and Marcel's family and friends.

Two years ago, one of our very respected club members passed away suddenly. It was a tremendous shock and a painful loss. I still think about him, but in time the grief passes.

Thanks for the summary Mark. Now I know who was making all the noise in the back of the room! ;-) No, just kidding.

You mentioned that you had hoped for more discussion on methods for collecting metrics, etc. Maybe we can continue the discussion here, if you like. Can you elaborate a bit more on this?

Marcel

There are hundreds of thousands of new titles published every year. It is next to impossible to stand out in such a throng. I have heard of some bookstores that are actually reducing the inventory they carry on the shelves for the express purpose of using the shelves to have more books facing cover out. Because people can see the cover the overall number of books being sold increases. Paradox, fewer items in store equals more sales.

You bring up an interesting point, Jay. There has been an evolution in the discussion of the fee from managing commitment to helping fund the conference. Regardless of the original intent, both can be seen as true. More importantly, we frequently need to manage to perception, not reality.

I still don't see how a fee should be seen as changing the spirit of PodCamp 'being by' to 'being for' the community. Indeed, one could argue that a fee should make people feel more invested in participating. Again, we could be dealing with perception here.

I have a lot of faith that the organizing team has the necessary experience in building and including the community to preserve that feel even with a fee - maybe moreso because of it.

No matter, I wish the naysayers would see the positive, or at least organize their own event in their own way.

The picture is truly disturbing....

Isabelle has called this phenomenon being 'Garfunkelled'.

When T6 started getting media exposure It cast a shadow over Broca's Area. I say to this day the Broca's is the only one I always love to do, (well now that Ken and I do Tangential Convergence that is fun too).

Without Isa I would have never started podcasting.
I don't have a top five (but I'm definitely going to check out yours!) but my favourite TED Talk so far has been Jill Bolte Taylor, the neuro-scientist who studied her own mind as she was having a stroke.
It's always about the middle ground- tinker too much, and you mess with what works; tinker too little, and it can get stale. Leave it alone, and things happen when you least expect them. Is the answer setting timers in all parts of your life, including the kitchen, to check on progress or evaluate what your doing? I think so.

Mark: Understood. I can speak only for my own goals for Podcamp Toronto, and that was to have as many _engaged_ people as possible. Pure numbers honestly don't matter a bit to me, personally. If we had ended up with fewer people than last year I honestly wouldn't have minded as long as those people showed that high level of engagement and participation.

Personally, I still believe in the spirit and practice of the first Podcamp in Boston, and I think we have kept some of that alive at the Toronto Podcamps. Once again this year, some of very favorite moments happened not in scheduled sessions but in spontaneous hallway conversations, circles and evening events. I understand the interest in verticals, but I see a PodCampEDU, for example, as being different than a Podcamp. One of the best things about Podcamp is the mixture of people of all levels of experience with a huge range of interests being thrown together, and my fear would be parsing things out into verticals would destroy that wonderful chaos, which for me has been the root of so much inspiration.

One common complaint about Podcamp Toronto was the physical distance between the Z2P room and the rest of the sessions. This was 100% my decision and my fault, but what I take most from the comment is that people LIKE the mixture of new & old, expert & newbie, rockstar and rockstars-that-may-not-know-they-are-rockstars-yet (i.e. everyone at Podcamp!)

Sigh. I was kind of hoping that the podcasting community was immune to Reason Two, which I've seen at play elsewhere in other so-called "communities".

I suppose we can chalk it up to something sad in human nature, but it was nice to think for a while that maybe we podcasters were different.

I hope Andrea's right -- I've been chanelling as much positive energy as I can for this, and I'll continue to do so.

I still listen to some people who are in their basement but I have picked up more "pro" shows like CBC's vast offerings. Podcasting is and I think always will be a great place for "geeks" and amateurs to hang out in the fishbowl and talk about their interests. But I expect more now then I did 2 years ago, both from the shows I listen to and from my own show.

What I think is the "next explosive development cycle" for podcasting is to put the portable back into it. Its great that a person can subscribe on their computer and then it syncs to you music player but I want the computer out of the equation. We are close with the iphone/touch having itunes and wifi but no podcast support. We are close with the Zune having wifi sync capabilities but it needs a computer to live. Give me a computer free way to subscribe, download and update podcasts and I will give you my mother as a listener.
